Small weddings and elopements are on the rise (for obvious reasons). 2020 is the year where couples strip it all back and get back to the meaning of what marriage really is – two people coming together to join in a dedicated, committed relationship. And this is exactly what Jonathan and Ruth did at Jeffrey Street Wharf in Kirribilli on an overcast Friday afternoon.

I met Jonathan and Ruth through a model call. Jonathan’s message to me completely pulled at my heart strings and I couldn’t say no to him! His love for Ruth was obvious from the very first word and I thought they’d be the perfect couple for what I needed. We met one afternoon and spent a couple of hours having a great time, testing new prompts for my wedding couples and capturing some beautiful images of both of them.

Fast forward a year later, Ruth reached out to me and asked if I would be able to photograph their intimate wedding on the edge of Sydney Harbour at Jeffrey Street Wharf. This little patch is a popular location for small weddings and elopements featuring both of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks (and best of all, it’s free!). Of course I said yes! How could I not?

I was so excited to see these two to take that next step in their journey as a couple and capture this special day and see them again!

The ceremony was attended by 10 of their closest friends and family including the couples two children. The quick, but beautifully intimate ceremony lasted 10 minutes and was expertly delivered by the very charismatic Aido McManis from Just Married Weddings Australia. Both exchanged vows quietly to each other making it so personal and clearly just about them both in their moment.

Afterwards, a plate of cut strawberries and champagne was served to celebrate and then we headed along the nearby walkway for portraits. Ruth reminded me that she is extremely shy but I quickly brought out her laugh and beautiful smile by asking them to have their first dance for me.

My favourite part was when Ruth took her shoes off – I don’t know why, but I just love it when people take their shoes off! It’s so freeing!

We climbed the stairs to Dr Mary Booth Lookout where, on a lush green lawn, we took the final portraits against panoramic views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House before heading back where everyone officially congratulated them.
